I'm guessing the problem is that there is some file type that is associated with VLC (via "Tools > Preferences > Set up associations.") but should be associated with PowerDVD 17 instead. If I close VLC and use Windows Explorer to right-click on the Blu-Ray drive, the top option on the context menu is to run PowerDVD 17, but that's not what happens automatically.

However, instead of it running when a Blu-Ray disc is inserted, VLC runs. To be specific, I have CyberLink PowerDVD 17 installed, and that's the application that I want to use to play Blu-Ray movies. Some encrypted DVD's cannot be copied to your hard drive via handbrake/makemkv/nor will they play with VLC.I have the opposite problem of what most posters to this thread have: When I insert a Blu-Ray disc into the Blu-Ray drive on my PC (Dell desktop running Windows 7), the Windows Autoplay function launches VLC, but I don't want it to.

I understand that Blu-Ray is the only area the argument against the software falls shorter. I'm rather trying to prevent people from buying a Media Player when they can get the same functions better, free. Plenty of room to rip Blu-Ray and and less physical space to keep up with. I can't say the prices for hardware and software in other countries, but at the same price of PowerDVD ($75-$100) you could buy a 2TB hard drive, or even larger. I understand that predicament that some face. That's the reason I bought PowerDVD and I don't see alternatives.

Still scenes, it's okay, but compression artifacts and banding in scenes with low light or shades of color, or scenes with lots of high motion, like water moving or stars look really bad.įortunately I got my cyberlink 3D for free with my bluray burner - it works well for bluray and 3D (for now) but I've not liked the thought of paying even sale price for this software. TLDR: There are no free alternatives for proper Bluray playback.Īnd I also think the quality on HD streamed content is about as low a quality as I want to see anymore. This doesn't even take into account the extortionary feature monetization that Cyberlink wields with wild abandon (7.1 and HD audio is a pay option - seriously) or the intrusive system bloat their software employs. They want another $50 from you instead, no free upgrades. Old versions of PDVD simply stop playing newer discs because of new protection schemes and Cyberlink won't bother patching it in. The biggest reason you should pass on this software is the one that Jimmi missed - It times out. Suggesting ripping is flat out ridiculous. No hacking, no extra programs, no waiting, and no loading some strangers server to update their Licenses. So I just load my Blu-Ray and press play with my controller. I bought a controller from NEWEGG which lets me control my media player and it works with this too. It will also let you stream to tv if it has a compatible streaming device.

Ultraviolet comes with some movies which lets you have a digital copy on the internet in case you ever scratch your DVD. The DVD/Blu-ray program comes with Ultraviolet capabilities which lets you play your Ultraviolet movies on your IPhone. It also lets you make a copy of one CD and burn it into another CD all at one time. The files also come with "Desktop Gadgets" which allows you to drag and drop a file into the gadget and launch the program.įor example: Drag and drop random mp3's into the Desktop Gadget and then burn them by clicking the icon again.

It comes with CD Burner/Ripper, Media Player, Ultraviolet Cloud, it can turn your Smartphone into a remote controller for your computer, file converter that will connect directly to youtube and convert files to 1080p and upload them to the internet all at one time, and it will also allow videos recorded from a phone to convert to. It only installed other applications if you buy the "suite".
