Throughout the design and construction process, the sustainability of the plaza was considered in terms of both material endurance and landscape performance. Impressively, the plaza surface and drainage infrastructure allows rainfall and snow melt to be channeled into large holding tanks and re-used to support the memorial forest via a specialized drip and spray irrigation system once fully grown, a memorial grove, a dense forest at the heart of the redeveloped World Trade Center, will provide shaded space and cool the air throughout the district and an enormous volume of soil – 40,000 tons in total – lies buried beneath the plaza to ensure that the oaks will grow and thrive to maturity. Using Vectorworks Landmark software, Peter and his firm were able to design the stunning memorial, as well as the expansive and eco-friendly plaza surrounding it. The park covers 7 acres and was designed by Peter Walker, FASLA, of PWP Landscape Architecture.
